This guy wasn’t a very quick thinker. He should have said.

:)!! Yes...if only he'd thought of the possibility of her being there ahead of time, he could've had a story all worked out. Like you said, he obviously wasn't able to do it on the spot....
Also, she could've said---ah ha!! so you ARE coming here! I knew it. I've had a hunch and this was the only way I could find out for sure....
Or something to that effect. Maybe it was their lack of creativity that ultimately did them in.
