It takes a spot of courage to stand up tall and a bit of derring-do to rise when you fall

No End In Sight

I recently read on someone's blog that their cold/cough thing lasted a month (and still going, I think). Are you kidding me?? Mine still hasn't gone away and doesn't seem to be in any hurry to, but a month? In a month I'll weigh about a million pounds from lack of exercise, which won't really matter because I'll be dead from lack of sleep. Sheez.

Everywhere I go, I'm offered a remedy. Yesterday I heard, "eat the rind of a lime. It'll go away faster." Is this for real? I'm so sick of coughing, I just might try it. But I have my doubts. Does anything actually work?

I don't know if that would really work. But I do want to say I think we've found another method of contagion. I read your initial blog about being sick and though "Oh poor Jay Are" and then voila! I got the same cough and cold. Just from READING A BLOG! Yep. Stay away from blogworld if you don't want to get sick, that's what I always say.

whenever i get a cough it can linger for months (like 4-5) even though i'm still feeling fine. the only thing i learn from that is that delsym is the best cough suppressant in the world.

and it lasts 12 hours. yay!

feel better soon!

As Dave Barry is fond of saying, "I'm not making this up." Since I work in a medical rare book room I have access to some wonderful old remedies. Here's one from "Culpeper's School of Physick" printed in 1639. I'm copying this from the original source [except for my bracketed explanations:
"For a Cough or Consumption of the Lungs"
-Take a cock, and when you have killed him, pull off the feathers while he is hot, then presently cut him through the back with a sharp knife, pull out all the bowels, and wipe him clean with a cloth, break all the bones, and put him into an Alimbeck [an apparatus formerly used in distilling], and distil him with a pottle [about 2 quarts] of Sack [a kind of white wine], and as much red Cows Milk, so will you have an excellent spirit for a cough or consumption of the lungs, if you take three or four spoonfuls of it in the morning fasting."
I hope you try this since we're all curious to know the results.

Was it me? STILL. SICK. Seriously. I'm on an antibiotic now. I don't think it's working. I'm really enjoying the night time dose of codeine cough syrup though. Honestly that's the only thing that's stopping the cough. During the day I'm trying to hork up the gunk as much as possible. (TMI?) and that's not really happening either. It's just STUCK in my lungs.
I hope you feel better soon. And yes, after a month, my legs are the consistency of jell-O.

yes, DDM, it was you---you can't still be sick? Ack! Not what I want to hear. Codeine's about the only thing that relieves me at night, too, but there's still the day-time coughing fits.
and unca...um, not sure about that remedy. I really do appreciate the advice, however. I'll have to, uh, give it some more thought. Okay, all done. :)

and delsym doesn't seem to do much for me :( Maybe I'll try it again.

The only thing I know that works for certain is time—time for healing.

i feel your pain. like heatherfeather, if i catch something it lasts for MONTHS! (i have allergies & asthma -- know that doesn't help. and when i had my cats, i would be sick year-round. i started to feel a lot better after i "got rid" of them*.) codeine has helped at night -- most of the time. and i have to use an inhaler (albuterol) sometimes.

there's a cough drop that i suck on (oh, this doesn't sound good) which i think is more powerful than most -- hall's ice blue. most of the time it helps the tickle. but sometimes, there is NOTHING that can stop the coughing. :(

hope you're feeling better soon.

* they got old and sick.

Hope you get better soon - I can't relate since I haven't had a cold in a couple of years. I'd like to think that it is because of all the vitamins I take. Of course, I have the bad back and hopefully you don't - we all have different kinds of ailments. ec

Oh man, I feel for ya. Home remedies are flowing freely around here too. So far none have helped my old man. He's had the bad cough for SEVEN WEEKS, no kidding. I MADE him go to the doc when it reached one month. They gave him tons of stuff, but the only thing that works is the stuff he can't take while working.
I hope you feel better a lot sooner than him!!!!

When I read your last line my eyes must have crossed because I somehow read "at the end of time it will get better". Something about the letters of the lime and rind and everything. Grab a scarf and buy stock in kleenex. so sorry, get better soon...
