It takes a spot of courage to stand up tall and a bit of derring-do to rise when you fall

It Makes My Blood Boil!

Today I saw a girl smoking. Bad.

Today I saw that girl smoking and she was pregnant. EVIL!!!!

It makes me so mad!! To be so careless and so ignorant and so self-centered and so unhealthy. Why isn't that considered child abuse, I'd like to know? Why do people like her get pregnant when there are so many desperate women---women who would be careful and healthy and safe and thankful---who can't? Unfair.

And of course---in true smoker fashion---as soon as she was done furthering the damage to her unborn child, she tossed the cigarette on the ground. Naturally. I mean, where ELSE do you put a cigarette??

I couldn't agree with you more! When I was working I remember talking to women who had had no prenatal care, smoked meth prior to delivery and had absolutely no thought as to how this was all going to go down, and yet were *APPALLED* at the suggestion that Child Protective Services would be involved. As much as I tried not to be judgemental, it's hard to understand how a person could be so selfish as to truly disregard the life and health of an innocent child who didn't ask to be conceived. Argh.

Oh. How did you hold your tongue? Just today....Bugga and I were going to our car after his speech therapy session and passed a VERY pregnant woman, leaning against the wall of the HOSPITAL in a hospital gown, complete with patient ID bracelette....smoking. My state passed a law in December that states no one can stand within 25 feet of any door or window of any public building. So not only was she pregnant and smoking, she was leaning AGAINST A NO SMOKING SIGN at a hospital. Unforgivable.
On the tossing of the butts....I once threw a butt back into the open window of a car stopped in front of me and yelled "Please don't litter". This is such a hot button with me....grrr.....

I think we can all agree that smoking is bad for you, bad for those around you and bad for unborn babies. We have a right to be indignent when confronted with the site of a pregnant woman smoking. That said, I think society's take on pregnancy is a bit ironic as exemplified by a Seinfeld episode that sticks in my mind. In the episode, Elaine lectures a pregnant woman who is smoking a cigarette in front of her. It's bad for your baby in so many ways, she notes. Now cut to another episode where Elaine, an avid pro-choicer is lecturing another person on the right to choose. In other words, Elaine is indignant at the sight of a woman smoker because of the harm it may do to the baby. At the same time she's defending the woman's right to destroy the baby entirely. I admit I have some unanswered questions about the issue of abortion but I know there are many people who speak out so forefully about smoking and pregnancy but are not pro-life (and I'm NOT suggesting that anyone responding to this post necessarily falls within this category). Is this hypocritical? It seems so to me. I do not mean to offend anyone on this issue but feel compelled to pass on my own observations in this matter.

that is an interesting point you make, unca. I suppose the thought could be that if you're GOING to have a baby, carry it, keep it, etc., then take care of it! Give it a chance to be healthy from the beginning. But it is an interesting flip-flop.
