What A Racket

I'm trying to wrap my mind around this whole Scientology business of "silent birth". As in: you can't make a sound while delivering your baby. Like my enlightened husband said, "I wonder what man came up with that." Exactly. Because I can guarantee you, it wasn't a woman. And I'm not saying that many many woman aren't quiet, even silent, during childbirth. Apparently my mom was. I personally don't know how a woman is silent during childbirth, but the bigger question to me is: why on earth would she possibly be required to be silent? Well, the answer is that supposedly childbirth causes emotional stress to the newborn if it hears the mother groan in pain during delivery.

I can't remember the last time I heard such hooey.

No offense intended but come on!

GROAN in pain? My kid must have been completely traumatized then, because I was no trooper, baby; I screamed my bloody head off.

I have been doing some reading on Scientology. Not Dianetics, but some articles etc., that don't really lean to or away from it. I was trying to get an unbiased idea of what it's all about. Goes with my whole 'don't judge until you walk a mile in their shoes' belief. You know what my conclusion is?
They're NUTS.
And on the silent birth? I couldn't do it. After 28 hours of labor, I couldn't have made any decision, let alone the one to be silent.

I'm right there with you, DDM. (not on the 28 hour labor, tho. Ugh. You earn the right to do whatever you want during labor :))

Well, I'm the quiet type...I'm sure I made some noise, but I'm not a screamer...this is just a bunch of baloney. I mean, it gives rise to this whole "child centered" mentality. I totally believe in infant attachment, but I'd be willing to bet they are a little preoccupied themselves comin' down the old chute... I doubt they are paying too much attentin to what mom's sayin' at that point!!

So you beat me to it! I saw that this morning, and it makes me scream just reading it. Having recently been through the birthing process, I can say that screaming or no, why would anyone want to stifle sounds, movements, etc that make the process more natural FOR THE BIRTHER!! And, I agree, L Ron Hubbard merely reinforces his gender. And Tom Cruise is a weasel. Never did like him. Now I'm horrified that he'd use his celebrity power to get some young, used-to-be-a-B-lister to embark on a lifechanging experience guided by him and someone who will never go through it himlself. My wrath is interfering with my eloquence so I'll stop here. Argh.

To me, there is much about Scientology, theologically and rationally, that makes no sense.

any word on whether the baby was human or alien?

because screaming at an alien birth may just piss the damn thing off as it acclimates to humankind and it would melt our brains with its thoughts as a fear reaction.

What about the baby? I don't think the baby should cry either because -- I mean -- how does that make the mother feel?

EXACTLY Unca!! (I was realizing just today that I hadn't seen hide nor hair from you in a long time). I think the baby should NEVER cry because then the mom will feel so bad.

It is just ridiculous. Why shouldn't the mother do exactly what she feels she needs to ... if that means scream, yell, swear, whatever ... she needs to get through it, not the man !! I don't know of any baby that can remember what their mother did or said at birth !!
Take care, Meow
