An Icky Subject, But Still...

Why is there a statute of limitations on child molestation? That makes no sense at all. This horrific act happens to children who are often made to believe that if they say anything, bad things will happen. So they say nothing. And then time passes and now they're adults and they realize----that was bad, it shouldn't have happened, I could've said something (in most cases), this person is still out there (possibly still committing atrocities), etc. etc. There shouldn't be a statute of limitations.

I'm thinking about this in connection with this case. Just because the once-kids are now adults doesn't mean he shouldn't have to pay for what he did (considering it's proven, of course).

And that's my opinion about that.

I was not aware that there is a "statute of limitations" for this kind of crime, and in fact the article doesn't say exactly what the limitations are. I often encourage my adult clients to report crimes against them even if they were years ago. Just the reporting of it can be very empowering and therapeutic, but I had no idea that there was a limitation.

I know for sure there's no limitation if that person is still in a position where they could hurt kids, but I guess this guy is retired...?

Sickening.

....just ask the Benders; re: Johnny!!! They can give you up-to-the-minute details on legislation. His molestor is in San Quentin.

well, it said that "in many cases the allegations fell outside the statute of limitations" or something like that. So...I don't know. Sure seems like it shouldn't matter WHEN it gets reported. Anyway...when the person holds a position of trust, it's just about as evil as it gets. They should all be in San Quentin.

There IS a statute of limitations. That is why some of the victims in RM's case couldn't do anything. But my understanding is it depends on the mode of molestation, if you know what I mean, and I WON'T mention it here!

yeah, it's just an all-around bad subject that's unfortunately a reality for far too many people.

I agree that there shouldn't be a statute of limitations on this horrible crime. Sometimes it take a person a lifetime to come to terms with something that happened to them as a child, and come forward.
