It takes a spot of courage to stand up tall and a bit of derring-do to rise when you fall

You Call That Fat?

Recently I've seen several references to the weight gain of Tyra Banks (a former model and host of the show "Next Top Model" for the few who might not know), and now the latest People magazine has an article regarding recent headlines and an interview with Tyra Banks.

I, personally, am not a fan of Tyra Banks....but come on----fat??? Give me a break. Is she heavier than she used to be when she was modeling? Yeah. Is she the approximate size of a yardstick? No. Could she stand to lose 25 pounds or so? Yeah, if that was important to her. Is she as flat as a pancake, without any curves or shape---like an ironing board? No.

A part of the interview that got to me was when she said she had to explain to her girls that the photos in question weren't "ugly". And that's the part that concerns me: young girls are fed the message constantly that being painfully thin---at any cost---is beautiful. Obviously beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and all that, but what's pretty about a skeleton? Makeup helps and draping the skeleton with cute clothes can help....but what about hugging it? You might get poked or jabbed by a protruding bone. To say nothing about the health risks.

At any rate, can we all agree that Tyra Banks isn't fat? A lot of things maybe, and some of them not so flattering, but "fat" isn't one of them.

Tyra ain’t fat! I am fat. I know the difference.

I’ve read recently that in Italy they are no longer hiring emaciated models because trying to look them has been undermining the health of young women. Sounds like a great idea to me.

yes, there's been a lot of movement that way, though not all countries are buying it. Sounds good to me as well, even with any downsides (whatever those might be).

I read that supermodels in 1995 were a size 6 and now they are a size 0. What has happened in 12 short years?

even tho i don't watch any of tyra's shows, i am pretty positive she is NOT fat.

i recall something recently in the q&a portion of the parade magazine, a supplement in the sunday newspaper (think it's called "personality parade"). there was a query about the possible new trend of getting more realistic (not emaciated) models and what did parade think about that. the guy answered he preferred the thin models as the clothes hung much better. i was annoyed at his answer (not that i think he's some kind of answer guru but most of the time he sounds pretty reasonable). i believe a lot of other readers were also annoyed, as indicated in a subsequent issue.

I never thought those runway models were attractive. Most men will say the same thing.
The few that do find them really attractive are the gay clothes designers. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
I think Marilyn Monroe was a size 8 or 12.

On a few occasions I have greeted thin (model like) women with a hug and I just felt a butch of bones against my body. What’s the fun in that?
