i also have been to vienna (have i mentioned this before?) when i was 16 or 17. unfortunately, at that time i was not as appreciative as i should have been about the beauty and the history and the music. mozart was "my mother's music" (she had played the violin) and i was disdainful of all classical music. i have since come to appreciate "the classics", and in particular, mozart.
i was part of a high school band that was invited to perform at a prestigious viennese contest. most of us had never traveled at all, let alone so far away and for so long (3 1/2 weeks). also most of us got very ill during the trip (i myself caught a cold in bangor, maine, where we had stopped to re-fuel, and had bronchitis for most of the trip). and *every* minute was planned for us (tours, performances, parades). it wasn't conducive to the "appreciation" of where we were.
a few years ago i had the opportunity to go to vienna (and a few other places) on a river cruise. unfortunately, things didn't work out and i couldn't make it. the group that did go ended up booking an earlier trip than when i was going to be included. that worked out for the best for them because if we had gone when it was originally planned, we would have been caught in the worst floods some of the rivers had experienced (topped the high-water marks) and would have had the trip cut short. the group did thank me for dropping out! :)
i would truly love to go back to austria. hopefully i will someday!

thanks for sharing, si. So much of travel can be wasted on youth! But hopefully you'll get that chance to go back. That would be great to see things with a fresh eye. It's definitely on the list of places I'd like to see in my lifetime.

It is, swissmiss!! I had the opportunity to go there for a year when I was in my early 20s and I didn't (kickin' myself!)...my cousin went instead and the pictures and stories were wonderful. I definitely have it high on the list :)
